Breathe Life into Your Photography

Here are some tips to help you get your photos from good to wow.

Get to Know Your Camera

Most phones have amazing camera modes. Here's when to use which mode*:

Android Phones (Honor, Huawei, Pixel, Samsung, Xiaomi)

  • Selfie mode.

Makes you the star by blurring the background.
  • Portrait mode/Live focus.

Gives your photos a professional look by blurring the background so your subject stands out.
  • Sports mode.

Reduces blur in fast-moving, action shots.
  • Pro mode.

Gives you full control over shutter speed, exposure, focus, and white balance.
  • Night mode.

Brightens photos in low light (cloudy weather, dark interiors, or at night). Night mode takes longer to capture, so be sure to hold still.

Apple iPhone

  • Night mode.

* Not all features are available on all models - check your phone's camera options.

Lighting is Everything

Light completely changes the feel of your photo. Here's how to play with it easily:

  • Face the light for clear, bright shots.

For softer, glowing selfies, turn slightly away or find softer light (like shade, cloudy skies, light bouncing off a wall or table).
  • Light behind you = dramatic or moody.

Great if you want a mysterious silhouette or a gentle glow around your subject.

  • Mix colours if you can.

If there's a coloured light nearby (party lights, neon signs), let one side of your face catch a different colour for a fun, cinematic vibe.

  • Play with shadows.

Shadows, especially from objects like window blinds or tree leaves, can add interest without any extra effort.

Adding Depth and Interest

Photos feel more alive when they have layers. Try these easy tricks:

  • Step back and include some foreground.

Snap your photo through leaves, balloons, or glasses on a table to add depth.

  • You don't have to center your subject.

Move them a little to the side for a more natural, interesting shot.

  • Get close.

Fill the frame with what matters most - your friends, the cake, or that first dance - while still showing a bit of the background.

Don't Forget to Have Fun

Snaps makes the sharing easy - so have fun with it, snap lots of photos, try different angles, and you're sure to end up with some gems.
